Regalis, as of
In brief
EU citizens need neither a visa nor a work permit to work in Germany and register their address after the move. After registration come health insurance, the social insurance number, the tax identification number and a bank account, usually in quick succession. Your employer and Regalis help with the registration, and only the responsible authorities decide on applications.
Before the move
A valid identity card or passport is enough to enter Germany. You do not need a visa.
Pack the documents that authorities, landlords and your employer ask for. Originals and copies save you trips later.
Before you leave, agree with the company where you will live at the start and how you will get to work on the first day.
- Identity card or passport
- Employment contract or written commitment from the company
- Certificates and proof of your work experience
- Driving licence, if you have one
- Birth certificate and marriage certificate if your family comes with you
Registering your address
Anyone who moves into a home in Germany registers with the registration office of the town or municipality. It is often called the citizens' office.
For the registration you need your identity document and a confirmation from the person providing the home. The landlord issues this confirmation, or the company if it provides the housing.
Register soon after moving in. Many offices give appointments online. Your employer and Regalis help you find an appointment and prepare the documents.
Insurance and numbers for payroll
With a job in Germany you are usually covered by statutory insurance, including health insurance. You choose a statutory health insurance fund and tell your employer.
Your employer registers you for social insurance. Your social insurance number then arrives by post.
After you register your address, your tax identification number also arrives by post at your new address. Your employer needs it for payroll. Pass the number on as soon as it arrives.
Bank account
Your pay goes into an account. An account with a bank in the EU is usually enough.
Many people open an account with a bank in Germany after registering. Banks usually ask for your identity document and the registration certificate.
Housing
With a placement through Regalis, the company provides housing for the start or actively helps you find a home. You learn what it offers before you accept.
For a home of your own, landlords often ask for the employment contract and payslips. With your first payslip, the search becomes easier.
Driving licence
A driving licence from an EU country is usually valid in Germany as well. You then do not need to exchange it.
For professional drivers, proof from an EU country, code 95 on the driving licence, is recognised in Germany, as is a driver card from the EU.
Family
Family members who are EU citizens themselves do not need a visa either. Like you, they register at the new place of residence.
Different rules apply to family members from countries outside the EU. The responsible immigration office gives information.
The first weeks
The start is your induction at the company. Ask when something is unclear.
Your employer and Regalis remain available to you during this time. Your pay and working hours are set out in your employment contract.
