Duties and workplaces
Nurses care for people who are ill, elderly or in need of care. They plan the care, carry it out and record it in the documentation. They work closely with doctors, therapists and relatives.
Everyday work includes handovers in the team, giving medication as prescribed by a doctor and guiding care assistants. Nursing is shift work, including weekends and nights.
Language plays a big part in this. Anyone who looks after residents and keeps records has to communicate with confidence.

Recognition
Regulated profession
The responsible office is an office of the federal state in which the work is to be taken up.
Nursing is one of the regulated professions. Only people with the state authorisation to use the professional title may work as a registered nurse. For a foreign qualification this means: without recognition there is no authorisation.
Offices of the federal states decide on recognition. What usually counts is the state in which the work is to be taken up. The route starts at the portal Recognition in Germany. There you find the responsible office and the list of documents by entering occupation and place of work.
The office checks whether the foreign training essentially matches the German one. If substantial differences remain, the decision names them. This decision is called a notice of substantial differences. The differences can be made up through a compensation measure, meaning an adaptation course in practice or a knowledge test.
A nurse may in some cases enter Germany before recognition is complete. This is the route of the recognition partnership, in which company and nurse complete the procedure in Germany. The German mission abroad and the foreigners authority set out the conditions in detail.
As a rule, the nurse submits the application personally. The company can help with the documents and make the compensation possible in-house. Only the responsible office decides on equivalence and authorisation. Nobody promises a result or a time frame.
German language skills
The authorisation requires the German language skills needed for the profession. The responsible office states which level is required, which proof counts and whether a test of the professional language is added.
The professional language covers everyday work on the ward: handovers, documentation and conversations with patients and relatives. A general course often does not prepare for this well enough.
Plan for the language early. In nursing it is often the longest part of the route. We record the candidates' language level on the European scale from A1 to C2 and ask for proof.
Documents
We ask registered nurses for these documents. They help with the preselection and later with the application for recognition.
- required CV Including wards, specialist areas and scope of duties.
- required Professional licence or nursing diploma The document granting your licence to practise, plus a translation.
- required Employment references Proof of the years you have worked in nursing.
- required German language certificate Recognition usually calls for a formal certificate.
- if available Note: certificate of good conduct Some employers ask for it. Only submit it when you are asked to.
- if available Note: medical clearance Work with patients may require a medical clearance.
The list is a general guide and creates no legal entitlement. The responsible office and the company say what is required in the individual case.
Training in Uzbekistan and Türkiye
Türkiye
In Türkiye nursing training is a university degree. This differs from the German route through vocational training and matters for recognition. Whether the qualification is equivalent is checked case by case by the responsible office of the federal state.
Uzbekistan
In Uzbekistan vocational training runs through colleges and technical schools with a lot of practice. Universities award bakalavr and magistr degrees, including in medicine. The subject overview shows what a nursing course there covered. The individual qualification is always assessed, not the country.
