Duties and workplaces

Truck drivers transport goods with lorries and articulated trucks. They plan routes, secure the load, check the vehicle and keep the papers. At the customer's premises they hand over the goods and clarify questions.

In long-haul transport, drivers are often on the road for several days and sleep in the vehicle. In regional transport they are home in the evening. This makes settling into the new country easier.

Driving and rest times, the digital tachograph and roadside checks are part of everyday work. Drivers who know the rules drive safely and calmly.

Recognition

Regulated depending on the individual case

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce is responsible.

The law does not require a vocational qualification as a professional driver for the work. The work itself, however, is tied to two proofs: the right driving licence and the professional driver qualification. This is why the occupation is classed here as regulated depending on the activity.

A driving licence from an EU country is usually valid in Germany as well. A licence from a country outside the EU and the EEA only remains valid for a limited time after moving to Germany. After that a German licence is needed, which the driving licence authority issues on application. Which tests are required depends on the country and the category.

The professional driver qualification is a separate qualification for transport with trucks and buses. It is obtained with the initial qualification and maintained through further training. The Chambers of Industry and Commerce hold the examination. A driver qualification card from another EU country or code 95 on the driving licence is treated the same as the German proof.

For drivers from outside the EU, the employment usually requires the approval of the Federal Employment Agency. The Employment Ordinance provides a separate route for professional drivers: approval can also be granted if the licence and the qualification are only obtained in Germany. For this, the driver needs the relevant licence from the country of origin, and the employment contract obliges the driver to take part in the necessary measures.

Only the responsible offices decide on the driving licence, qualification, approval and visa. We clarify these points early and tell you openly if the route will be long. Nobody promises a result or a time frame.

German language skills

German helps with papers, roadside checks and contact with customers. The examination for the initial qualification also needs preparation. There is no fixed level for everyone, however.

What is required depends on the residence title, on the position and on the company. The responsible office or the company states it in the individual case.

We record the candidates' language level on the European scale from A1 to C2 and ask for proof.

Training in Uzbekistan and Türkiye

Türkiye

In Türkiye many drivers learn their occupation in practice, often over many years in freight transport. What matters is a driving licence of the right category and proof of driving experience. The responsible authority says how a foreign driving licence is treated in Germany.

Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan many drivers have gained experience at home and abroad, often without a certificate of their own. We record what is proven and what is not. The driving licence and confirmations from former employers are especially important here.
