Duties and workplaces
Bricklayers build walls, pillars and chimneys from bricks, blocks and concrete. They read plans, set out, erect formwork and work with mortar and concrete. Sealing and work on existing buildings are also part of the job.
The work takes place in building construction, in renovation and partly in civil engineering. Workplaces change with the building sites. Anyone arriving without a car needs a clear arrangement for travel.
Construction works to an annual rhythm. Demand rises sharply in spring, while many trades pause in winter.

Recognition
Non-regulated occupation
Depending on the reference occupation, the Chamber of Skilled Crafts or the Chamber of Industry and Commerce is responsible.
The occupation is not regulated in Germany. A company can hire a bricklayer with a foreign certificate without that certificate being recognised. For people from countries outside the EU, however, the residence title comes into play.
The title as a skilled worker usually requires the qualification to be equivalent to a German one. In certain cases work experience can also lead to employment, under additional conditions set out by the official bodies.
Construction occupations exist in the crafts and in industry. The chamber compares the qualification with the German occupation and issues a decision.
The route starts at the portal Recognition in Germany. If differences remain, the decision names them. They can usually be made up through adaptation training. Another route is the recognition partnership, in which company and skilled worker complete the procedure after entry.
As a rule, the skilled worker submits the application personally. Only the responsible chamber decides on equivalence. Nobody promises a result or a time frame.
German language skills
Safety comes first on building sites. Safety briefings must be understood, which is why a basic level of German is important. There is no fixed level for everyone, however.
What is required depends on the residence title, on the position and on the company. The responsible office or the company states it in the individual case.
We record the candidates' language level on the European scale from A1 to C2 and ask for proof.
Documents
We ask bricklayers for these documents. On building sites, references for completed work often say more than a qualification.
- required CV Including construction types, trades and size of projects.
- if available Skilled worker certificate in construction Bricklaying, concrete work or a comparable qualification.
- required Employment references Proof of your years on site and the work you carried out.
- if available German language certificate Basic skills matter for safety briefings.
- if available Occupational safety records Briefings or records on scaffolding and fall protection.
The list is a general guide and creates no legal entitlement. The responsible office and the company say what is required in the individual case.
Training in Uzbekistan and Türkiye
Türkiye
In Türkiye vocational education usually starts at vocational upper secondary schools with a subject focus. Many candidates have also deepened their trade on building sites. Whether a qualification is equivalent is checked case by case by the responsible chamber.
Uzbekistan
In Uzbekistan young people learn an occupation at colleges and technical schools with a lot of practice, for example in construction. Many candidates have learned their trade on the job, often abroad as well. There is not always a certificate for this.
